What is a Disk Defrag?

Disk Defrag is a program built into the operating system. Think of the all files on the computer as all the books in a huge library, the more you use files, the messier the library gets as the files don't get put back in the right place. Eventually the computer will take longer to load programs and files because it needs extra time to sort through and find what it's looking for.

A disk defrag is like hiring a temporarily librarian to sort and organize all the files and programs into a sequential order and categorising it so the computer can find what its looking for more efficiency . The image below is a 'before' and 'after' example of a disk defrag

Those instructions can be anything from Photo editing in Photoshop, scanning for viruses with Norton or playing music in iTunes.

What is an Operating System?

An operating system is the core software of the computer. Think of it as the green lego base. Without the base, you have no where to put the blocks (Programs).

The main operating systems are Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows 8, as well as OSX (Mac). All computers run a form of operating system as the visual interface makes it much easier to use. The OS is essentially the link between the user and the computer.
